Yacht Clubs

Yacht Club insurance exposures are quite complex, because they pose a mixture of both maritime and land-based insurance exposures. First, a club is a commercial marina with many of the same exposures -- workboats, boat moorage and storage, fueling, hauling and launching of members’ boats. Often there is exposure from the club's sailing schools, regattas, club owned power and sail boats. Even small boat and yacht clubs can be subject to US Admiralty law. Then there are the traditional land-based exposures such as property, liability and workers’ compensation insurance. All this adds up to quite a variety of different exposures. Recent court decisions regarding liquor liability highlight the need for proper liquor liability coverage.

For many years now, Northeastern Underwriters has provided coverage for this small, but unique, segment of the marine insurance community. To address the needs of clubs, we have established agent/brokerage relationships with a number of insurance carriers which specialize in the areas of coverage -- both marine and non-marine -- particular to yacht clubs.
